    Key Word Sign Presenter Training is an interactive, practical, and reflective 2-day ‘train-the-trainer’ program that prepares you to deliver theory and practical components of the following workshop packages:

           ‘Key Messages about Key Word Sign’ Introductory Workshop (Suite)

           ‘Getting Started with Key Word Sign’ Basic Workshop

           ‘Using Key Word Sign in Daily Life’ Intermediate Workshop

    Course Inclusions

    The course includes:

    • Pre-training access to a presentation library to support theoretical content.
    • 6-month access to KWSCreate including sign video and line drawing library, PCS symbol library and communication resource templates
    •   Training materials and handouts (electronic)
    • Individualised assessment feedback
    • Individualised mentoring support to prepare for delivery of first workshop.

    Theoretical content will focus on how to teach and facilitate group discussion about: a) the principles of a key word sign approach, b) multimodal communication and AAC, c) how KWS and gesture supports speech, language, and communication across the lifespan, d) the differences between KWS and signed languages, such as Auslan, e) individualising vocabulary and sign selection and e) creating signing environments.

    Practical content will focus on a) developing accurate production of selected signs, b) accurate identification of key words within a spoken utterance, c) developing fluency with simultaneous use of speech, sign and gesture, d) modelling of KWS and gesture within functional communication activities, e) use of scripting as a vocabulary planning technique, and f) presentation skills in face to face and online environments. 

    Assessment Requirements

     Assessment of theoretical knowledge, signing skills, and workshop presentation skills will be conducted using a combination of individual and group-based formative and summative tasks, reflection and self-evaluation. These will include:

    Active participation in course activities, including group discussion

    • Individual presentations within small learning groups
    • Written reflective and/or analytical tasks
    • Individual video submissions
    • Engagement with KWSA mentor
    • Delivery of a KWS Workshop (individual or co-facilitated)
    • Post workshop reflection and debrief

    You’ll learn all the tips and tricks needed to get you started with signing. A fun and interactive workshop set to leave you feeling inspired and ready to sign!

    You will learn:
    – How we communicate using natural gestures
    – The features of sign production (HOLME)
    – To recognise and accurately produce the signs in Interactive Vocabulary (Parts 1 and 2)
    – How to identify the key words to sign in a spoken sentence
    – How to use speech and sign / natural gesture within functional communication activities with basic accuracy and fluency

    In this intermediate key word sign course, you will build your knowledge of key word sign and gesture in familiar, everyday activities, routines, games and songs. You will learn about how to create a sign environment using strategies and resources to encourage and support the use of sign.

    The focus of this course is building your skills in signing accuracy and fluency through individual, small group, and whole group activities. You will revise the signs of the Interactive Vocabulary learned in ‘Getting Started with Key Word Sign’ and learn between 80 -100 news signs.

    Key Word Sign (KWS) can be used to support individuals with communication difficulties to understand and get their message across to others.

    In this workshop, you will learn the principles of KWS and gesture, who it can be used with and how it can be used alongside other ways of communicating. You will also learn up to 80 new signs along with common natural gestures, with opportunities to practice in a safe & fun group environment. You will leave the workshop with a detailed plan of the next steps in your KWS journey, as well as a host of helpful resources to support your learning.

  • Advanced Workshop – Virtual Full Day – Friday 14th November 2025

    In this advanced course, you will further build your knowledge of key word sign and gesture by exploring instructional techniques such as modelling, incidental teaching, and explicit teaching to support learning and use of key word sign by others. You will also learn strategies for supporting communication partners around an individual, including models of coaching, mentoring, and design of individualised sign support resources.

    The focus of this course is on spontaneous use of sign with accuracy and fluency within individual, small group, and whole group activities. You will learn between 80 -100 news signs and use known vocabulary within functional communication activities.

    This workshop is presented online and is a full day.

    You’ll learn all the tips and tricks needed to continue your signing journey. A fun and interactive workshop set to leave you feeling confident in your signing ability!
    The Intermediate Workshop provides you with the next step in building your skills in signing accuracy and fluency.

    In the Intermediate Workshop you will learn:
    – How to build your knowledge of key word sign and gesture including how to select and individualise signs
    – How to tailor and apply the information to your own personal circumstances and settings
    – Between 60 – 80 new signs aligned with topics such as: food, colours, animals, people, places, actions and numbers

    This workshop is suitable for those that have completed the Getting Started with Key Word Sign (basic) workshop and are interested in strengthening their signing ability
