In this advanced course, you will build further knowledge of key word sign and gesture by learning how to use instructional techniques such as modelling, incidental teaching, and explicit teaching to support learning and use of key word sign. You will also learn strategies for teaching sign to communication partners around an individual, including models of coaching, mentoring, and development of individualised sign support resources. Goal setting and evaluation frameworks will be explored to assist with monitoring key word sign and communication progress.

In this advanced signing activities, you will revise selected vocabulary items and will learn 80 – 100 new signs from within the categories of: Home; School; Work; Health and Medical; Clothing; Body Parts; Recreation and Leisure; and Parts of Speech. You will further develop skills in signing accuracy and fluency through individual, small group and whole group activities. Practice combining use of KWS with other methods of Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) will be included. Finally, you will learn how to modify signs and tailor KWS instructional techniques to meet individual needs and abilities.

This advanced course would suit individuals who have a sound knowledge of Key Word Sign and how it can support functional communication as well as confidence using a wide range of sign vocabulary spontaneously in 2-4 word combinations. You may be working with individuals, families, and communities who are learning to use key word sign, and wish to develop further evidence-based knowledge to provide advice, instruction, support and advocacy.

Are there any pre-requisites?
The Basic qualification ‘Getting Started with Key Word Sign’ and the Intermediate qualification ‘Using Key Word Sign in Daily Life’ are pre-requisites for this course.

What training can I do next?
After you have completed the ‘Teaching Others to Use Key Word Sign’ you can progress to Presenter Training. This is offered only as a full day online workshop.
