Key Word Sign Presenter Training is an interactive, practical, and reflective 2-day ‘train-the-trainer’ program that prepares you to deliver theory and practical components of the following workshop packages:

       ‘Key Messages about Key Word Sign’ Introductory Workshop (Suite)

       ‘Getting Started with Key Word Sign’ Basic Workshop

       ‘Using Key Word Sign in Daily Life’ Intermediate Workshop

 

Course Inclusions

The course includes:

  • Pre-training access to a presentation library to support theoretical content.
  • 6-month access to KWSCreate including sign video and line drawing library, PCS symbol library and communication resource templates
  •   Training materials and handouts (electronic)
  • Individualised assessment feedback
  • Individualised mentoring support to prepare for delivery of first workshop.

Theoretical content will focus on how to teach and facilitate group discussion about: a) the principles of a key word sign approach, b) multimodal communication and AAC, c) how KWS and gesture supports speech, language, and communication across the lifespan, d) the differences between KWS and signed languages, such as Auslan, e) individualising vocabulary and sign selection and e) creating signing environments.

Practical content will focus on a) developing accurate production of selected signs, b) accurate identification of key words within a spoken utterance, c) developing fluency with simultaneous use of speech, sign and gesture, d) modelling of KWS and gesture within functional communication activities, e) use of scripting as a vocabulary planning technique, and f) presentation skills in face to face and online environments. 

Assessment Requirements

 Assessment of theoretical knowledge, signing skills, and workshop presentation skills will be conducted using a combination of individual and group-based formative and summative tasks, reflection and self-evaluation. These will include:

Active participation in course activities, including group discussion

  • Individual presentations within small learning groups
  • Written reflective and/or analytical tasks
  • Individual video submissions
  • Engagement with KWSA mentor
  • Delivery of a KWS Workshop (individual or co-facilitated)
  • Post workshop reflection and debrief
